The Dark Side Of Being Single: Should A Guy Or Girl Pick You Up For the First Date?

“Pick you up at your place at 7?”
That’s right — guys used to pick girls up and then go to dinner together. I’m sure that most of the men reading this don’t even remember the last time they picked a girl up and then went to dinner together.
Such a sight is surely more common in suburban and more rural areas, but in urban settings, it’s basically nonexistent.
Just because you don’t have a car doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pick her up from her apartment. Why? For one, it’s a nice and gentlemanly thing to do and she’ll appreciate it (which should be enough).
Two, you should want to squeeze in as much time with her as possible. Picking her up before dinner will get you at least an extra 30 minutes.
This is an excerpt from an article written by Paul Hudson that appeared on Elite Daily titled: “11 Things That Are Suppose To Happen On A Date.”
I remember those days when a nice gentleman would pick me up from my home. Of course that was the pre-internet dating era. These dates were never blind dates. We had previously met either through friends, school, or in public somewhere.
Usually the guys loved to do this. It was part of the so-called dating ritual. They would spend all day washing and waxing their car making sure it looked extra special for that date! And it was super sweet when they would get out of their car and open the door for me!
Ah, but alas! The dating rituals have changed thanks to the internet. I’m not sure if this would be considered emasculating or not. The car pride has been taken away. And these days safety in dating is key.
I’ve had a few guys pick me up from my home with in the last few years for a first date. I did not meet them on the internet, but I had met them out in public somewhere. I know meeting real men out in public and not on the internet is so 1999!
But when these particular men picked me up, their cars were not shinning and glistening, but full of garbage! One had plastic water bottles, books and plastic bags in his car. There was enough dust and lint on his dash-board that I could literally knit a sweater. As I opened the door and saw what I was about to sit on, I just wanted to run! After all, a person’s outer world is a reflection of their inner world. He did later confess to me that he had been living out of his car homeless for a short period of time.
Basically, on the first date if you do not know the person it’s best to consider your personal safety and drive on your own. That way, if the date is not going well, you can save yourself from boredom and leave. If all goes well, the pick up can happen on the second date. And hopefully the guy or girl loves him self or at the very least wants to make a good impression, will have a clean car. If they don’t, then run for the hills!

Funny but honest and insightful advice about how to approach your first date. It does seem like the age of coincidental, organic meetings and dates is long-gone, doesn’t it? Ryan and I are probably two of the last people in the States that didn’t originally meet through a dating app.
