Disaster Capitalism: How People Are Profiting Off of the Los Angeles Fires

Capitalism is the only system in the world founded on credit and character.

I’ve been a NURSE for 3 decades. That’s a long time. And yes, I’ve worked in shelters in the midsts of a public disaster. Did I make it a PR stunt and strut my tail feathers saying “look at me. Look what I’m doing?”

No. Because it’s my JOB!

But in lieu of the Los Angeles fires, we’re seeing “disaster capitalism” at its finest.

What’s disaster capitalism?

It’s the practice of taking financial advantage of natural or man made disasters in unstable social, political or economic opportunities to “profit.”

We saw this ALOT during the pandemic when celebrities took to social media telling people to wash their hands and wear masks. Propaganda at its finest.

I mean, I’ve taught nursing at 4 universities. I’ve taught students proper hand washing techniques. I’ve taken microbiology classes to learn why hand washing is so important. But that doesn’t matter because I’m not a celebrity and I don’t have 1 million followers in TikTok.

So when you see Megan Markle & Harry in Pasadena giving “free hugs” to people you gotta wonder if they are being sincere or do they just need PR.

I think it’s the latter.

I’m sure there’s lots of nurses and first responders who are “donating” their time, but if they are not “famous” or some type of celebrity, we’re not gonna hear about them or see them on Fox News.

I could care less about the duke and dutches of Solussex. Meghan’s body language speaks a thousand words. She’s closed. She’s giving “fake” hugs.

Personally, I’m not a hugger unless I know the person. And when people touch another person like Meghan has been touching many people at these shelters, it’s usually a display of dominance. Like she’s saying “I’m important. You’re just a commoner who pays taxes.”

Lady C has a point. Sure, Meghan and Harry opened up their Montecito home to all their fire displaced “friends.” As, they should but why do we need to hear about it.

I too offered up my Palm Springs “mansion” to several “friends” but that’s not making news is it?

How Disaster Capitalism works

I personally didn’t know Disaster Capitalism existed. As soon as the fires hit, I started to watch several businesses posting on IG with sayings like “if you shop at my store I’ll donate 20% to fire victims. If you buy a painting I’ll donate 10 %.”

“I just wanted to do something and this is all I could think of.” a vintage shop owner posted on IG.

I personally went in to speak to this guy about a “job” I’m well over qualified for. He kept posting he needed a sales person and yes I do have “pharmaceutical sales” experience as well as experience in fashion because I use to design my own clothes and have them made by my mother. His shop is probably around 500 square feet and smelled like a wet dog. When I went in to speak to him, he was super rude! He also told me to send in a resume for a part time job as a sales person at a second hand vintage clothing store.

As I writer, I thought the whole experience was hilarious and no I never sent this guy my resume. I mean, I once walked into Dr. Fleiss’s ( Heidi Fleiss the infamous Hollywood Madam’s Father) pediatric clinic and got a job as a pediatric nurse practitioner just by talking to him. And yes I did give him my curriculum vitae. And now this guy wanted me to jump through hoops for his measly little resale shop?

But watching him on IG on a video promoting “disaster capitalism” just made me roll my eyes.

Then there was the grifter woman who runs the crazy cat cafe promoting free coffee for all people coming from LA, oh but wait it costs $20 to sit with the cats. Then the aggressive French woman who sells over priced croissants posting a red broken heart on her stories with #losangeles.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m devastated by this disaster and all the incompetence the city of Los Angeles elected officials displayed. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Malibu was my happy place, and biking down PCH to big rock was one of my favorite things to do, but capitalizing for you’re own business off of a disaster is just wrong.

Maybe I would believe these posts if I didn’t know who the people behind the posts were and from my experience they are not “nice” people 365 days of the year. They are nice only when it suits them.

Oh and let’s not forget about Jennifer Gardner & Save the Children

Sure Jennifer Gardner lost a friend in the fires and was holding back tears when she talked about it on camera. She’s promoting World Central Kitchen( and who knows what that organization is really a front for) I wonder if she sheds tears for the trafficked children her Save the Children organization she campaigns for. I mean the organization was just raided in Guatemala for trafficking children.

I personally worked at a migrant Children’s shelter in 2021 where over 1000 kids were being housed. Disaster Capitalism was at its finest there with several corporations sporting their brands on billboards at the shelter. There were several organizations “contracted” by the federal government to be there.

When I started asking the kids where they came from and where they were going, it was clear to me these kids were being trafficked. I mean 1000 migrant kids with no parents just don’t appear out of thin air.

I was fired 2 weeks later. I then complained to the woman who was in charge of the shelter “Hilda Solis” President Obama’s ex secretary of “labor.”

And now that there’s tons of evidence that these kids were and probably still are being trafficked to work in factories, used as prostitutes and organ procurement.

Yes, I rang the bell. I spoke to several civil rights attorneys. Nothing was done.

Hey I’m not a celebrity. I’m just a NURSE with 3 decades of experience.

Open you’re EYE’s. It’s time to wake up!
