Los Angeles Ain’t That Bad #100DaysOfSummer

Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will end up in Los Angeles

Los Angeles ain’t that bad. That’s right I said “ain’t!” I mean I grew up here. It was pretty cool. And at the moment it’s literally “cooler” than Palm Springs.

I grew up in Eagle Rock. One of my fondest memories as a kid was walking onto the set of the “Incredible Shrinking Woman,” starring Lilly Tomlin. I think I was about 6 years old and the movie was being filmed across the street from where I lived.

The whole tiny town of Eagle Rock was engulfed with movie rigs and movie people. My dad took me by the hand one day, and we crossed the street into “movie land” where a scene was being filmed. My dad tells the story of when the cameras stopped rolling, a man in a gorilla suit walked off set I was freaked out, I closed my eyes and held tight to my dads pant leg. At least that’s the story my dad tells.

My father started to laugh and told me to open my eyes. When I opened the, the gorilla had taken of his head to reveal he was actually a “human!”

Maybe that’s what happens in big cities like Los Angeles. People put on masks, or even gorilla suits to try and fit in while hiding their true personas.

But where does the true self go? And does that “true self” ever come out? the true self with no titles, no initials behind their name.

These are the things I ponder on my walk through the tiny neighborhoods of Eagle Rock. Flanked by million dollar shacks, cactus blooming crimson flowers and sweet love letters boasting how a couple fell in love on the street and are still together.

Then there’s Erewhon. Nowhere spelled backwards a trendy over priced super market a few steps above “Whole Foods Paycheck “ only found in SoCal. I mean, who could resist zucchini flower pizza.

And yeah. If you go to Erewhon you gotta try the “Haley Beiber Smoothie” at least once. In the words of Justine Beiber it’s definitely “Yummy,” with swirls of fresh strawberries intertwined with sea moss and a bunch of other ingredients you probably have never heard of. It’s worth a try for twenty bucks. I don’t know if I’d pay that much again for it. For me, it’s a “one off” try.

So yeah. I do love LA. Maybe not the people so much. But the city itself has boasts such interesting character that I really do think you can find anywhere else.
